The Runners project was a collaborative collection of products developed by the UO Sports Product Design class of 2020, based loosely on the idea of future pioneers. The premise: Pioneers of a fictional far reaching company consolidates the North American population into a single workforce and assumes control of everyday life and government. In this dystopian future the controlling company bans the act of unnecessary physical sport in order to limit the risk of injury to its indentured workers.
This breeds a new revolution where workers sneak out their compounds and escape into the abandoned cities that have stood empty since this corporate rule. The new pioneers in sport are called “Runners” and look to quench the thirst for adrenaline and excitement.
One of these new sports is called “Skeleton Cycle”. It is a combination of current urban downhill mountain biking events and luge. The bikes these athletes use are a combination of 3D printed lugs put together with found materials such steel pipes and automotive suspension. Since there is no drive train to propel these two wheel rockets. Weight is your friend and the more momentum you can generate the faster you can go.
